This is an introductory course to the concepts of doing web site design using a Content Management System. The first day will focos on general concepts of web site design where tha content and architecture of the site are maintained within a relational database. Day 2 will provide an intorduction to the Drupal CMS - today's top Open Source CMS system.
Day 1: [CMS Basics]

the basics of a CMS: database backend to store web content, theming, modules

overview of some of today's popular CMS systems - and their use for blogs, forums, portals, ecom, etc

brief introduction to server side web scripting

although it is clearly out of the scope of this course to teach PHP, .NET, Cold Fusion, etc a brief overview of server side versus client side processing will be given

although it is not necessary to have a detailed understanding of PHP for this course; any knowledge in this area will be helpful.

very brief intro to PHP and MySQL (and to a lesser extent the philosophy behind Open Source project development)

initial discussion of the Drupal CMS system (Open Source CMS based on PHP and MySQL)
Day 2: [Building a Drupal Site]

install and initial setup

the basic building blocks of Drupal - nodes, blocks, modules, themes

how to install and configure modules and blocks

adding content to your site

basic site theming - customizing the look of your site
This is an 8 hour course spread across 2 - 4 hour sessions.
A basic understaning of HTML is expected. An understanding of any programming language would be useful; but not required.
