Intro to Content Management Systems and Drupal 101

This is an introductory course to the concepts of doing web site design using a Content Management System. The first day will focos on general concepts of web site design where tha content and architecture of the site are maintained within a relational database. Day 2 will provide an intorduction to the Drupal CMS - today's top Open Source CMS system.

Course Length and Format: 

This is an 8 hour course spread across 2 - 4 hour sessions.

Course Prerequisites: 

A basic understaning of HTML is expected. An understanding of any programming language would be useful; but not required.

Drupal Intermediate: The Basics

This is an introduction to the Drupal CMS. We go into detail on almost every aspect of how Drupal works.

In this course we touch on all the basics of both how Drupal works as well as how to put together your first Drupal site. We will spend some time discussing Drupal.org as a development tool and go through how to find what you are looking for, how to get things fixed as well as provide information on the key documentation available.

This course consists of 8 hours of in class training spread across 2 days (4 hours each day).

Course Prerequisites: 

The concepts covered here do not require any knowledge of PHP and very little knowledge of SQL - but their is a lot of material covered. A solid understanding of web site design and at some knowledge of basic CMS concepts is required.

Drupal Intermediate: Intro to CCK and Views

Drupal modules tend to consists of 2 types of modules - functional modules and developer modules. The typical web site functional modules consist of such modules as blogs, forums, ecom, newsletters, etc. - modules which provide some core site functionality. Developer modules on the other hand do not provide a complete web site function on their own - rather they provide a tool for site developers to create custom applications.

Course Length and Format: 

This course consists of 8 hours of in class training spread across 2 days (4 hours each day).

Course Prerequisites: 

The student should be familiar with the basic set up of a Drupal site. They should know how to install and enable modules.

A knowledge of PHP is not required for this course.

Drupal Advanced: Views 1

This course focuses on the use of the Views module.

From the Views Project Page:

The views module provides a flexible method for Drupal site designers to control how lists of content (nodes) are presented. Traditionally, Drupal has hard-coded most of this, particularly in how taxonomy and tracker lists are formatted.

Course Length and Format: 

This course consists of 8 hours of in class training spread across 2 days (4 hours each day).

Course Prerequisites: 

Either a solid understanding of the basics of both CCK and Views or having already taken Drupal Intermediate: Intro to CCK and Views is required as a prerequisite to this course.

Knowledge of PHP is not strict requirement; however a small amount of PHP coding will be used.

Drupal Advanced: Module Design 1 - The Hook System

Drupal's hook system is without a doubt the key to its powerful architecture. The hook concept creates Drupal's modular functionality. From Drupal's API Reference Guide:

"To extend Drupal, a module need simply implement a hook. When Drupal wishes to allow intervention from modules, it determines which modules implement a hook and call that hook in all enabled modules that implement it."

Drupal Advanced: Module Design 2 - Designing a Complete Module

This course will show what is required to design a complete custom Drupal module. As a follow-up to Drupal Advanced: Module Design 1 - The Hook System we will use the hooks that we learned there as the ground work for designing our custom module. We will also use new hooks to add such things as custom administration settings, access control and our own custom blocks.

This course consists of 8 hours of in class training spread across 2 days (4 hours each day).

Course Prerequisites: 

Drupal Advanced: Module Design 1 - The Hook System as well as a solid understaning of PHP are essentials for this Advanced course.
